Danaus eresimus, Soldier

Freshly emerged female

Description: Orange-brown in color with black outer margins on both wings and white spots on forewings. Males have a black spot on the hindwing. Ventral hindwing has a light colored band that differentiates it from the Queen. Similar species is Danaus gilippus which is darker brown in color.

 

Habitat and Distribution: Swamps and weedy low-lying areas in South Floirda, Central and South America. This species has been reported from the upper Keys.

 

Host Plant: White vine (Sacrostemma clausum)

 

Natural History: This species can be locally abundant in swamplands of Florida but only occurs in the Keys as a stray
