Hypolimnas misippus, Mimic

Description: Heavily dimorphic. Males are black with three large white spots. Females are orange with a white spot near the forewing. 

 

Habitat and Distribution: This species has a very wide distribution spanning accross many continents. They have been found several times in Florida but likely are not breeding residents. There was a single specimen photographed from the island of Marathon on December 12th, 2015 by Larry Benvenuti and Neil Shoenfeld. (www.keysnet.com/2015/12/29/506372_mimic-butterfly-which-returns.html?rh=1) They show up periodically, mostly in the late fall and early winter.
