Final instar larvae

Description: 12-14 mm. Males are golden yellow with black markings and a black stigma. Females are dark brown with golden spots. The pattern of brown spots on the ventral hindwing is the key factor in identifying this species

 

Habitat and Distribution: Southeast United States, south through Central and South America. They have been found in Key Largo and Key West. They frequent vacant lots and weedy fields

 

Host Plant: various grasses

 

Natural History: There have only been a few records of this species in the Keys and it likely not a breeing resident
